Rita C. Rieger

March 25, 1941 — February 9, 2025

Rita Rieger who stubbornly persevered for 83 years found her way to heaven on February 9, 2025. On this day, even the dawn was vulnerable enough to share its colors and let the sun heal all those grieving. Born on March 25, 1941 and raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Rita lived a life full of love, laughter, and, of course, mischief. She spent many years working at Bradlee’s in Clark, New Jersey, where she worked with hardened palms and made countless memories and friends.

Rita had a fiery spirit that could never be extinguished. The best way to describe her was a phoenix who learned to fly with broken wings. She was always with her beloved Camel cigarettes, and spent her time and money at the slot machines, always striving for that big win. In her youth, she was a force to be reckoned with at the pool table, performing tricks that shocked us all. Cards, bingo, and her travels to Aruba and Atlantic City were some of her favorite pastimes, but nothing made her smile more than time spent with her family—especially during the holidays. She always defended us, never allowing anyone who hurt us go without facing justice.

She was never without a Cherry Pepsi and loved homemade meals. She appreciated music by Elvis and Queen, especially Bohemian Rhapsody, and always blasted Picture by Kid Rock. Rita had a deep love for crime shows like CSI, or shows like Maury and Judge Judy. She is most remembered for her humor, unfiltered personality, and flipping people off with a smirk and saying, “I’m still here!!!!!”

Now, she is reunited in heaven with her husband, Joe Rieger, and the son and daughter she lost too soon, who have been waiting over fifty years to wrap their mother in their arms again. She is also going to be met by her dear brothers and sisters, who are eagerly waiting to play cards with her.

Rita leaves behind a close and loving family who will miss her beyond words: her daughters, Joanne Ruffino (Michael) and Jodi Ruffino, and her cherished grandchildren Christopher (Harmony) Ruffino, Michaela, Nicole, and Gianna Ruffino. Though heaven was impatient enough to take her, her bold personality, her notable phrase “Ah hah! Got you,” and love for her family will remain in the hearts of those who were blessed enough to know her.

We take comfort in knowing that she left this life surrounded by everyone that loved her, just as she deserved. Each night we’ll look to the night sky for you, as you can still see light from a star after it has died. Rest peacefully, Rita—may the slots always hit, the music always play, and CSI always be on.

We love you, and we know—you’re still here.

A private memorial for the family will be held at a later date.
